NOTES: This rare film of Baby Dodds, "the grandfather of all jazz drumming" was made by Bill Russell in 1953. It allows the viewer to better understand Dodds' legacy. Never released until now (1999) it shows the old master in many moods.
A partial sound track was made shortly after the film was shot and has been utilized here in its entirety, along with some previously unreleased oral descriptions by Dodds. The film is a little gem for drummers of coming generations, regardless of the type of music they play.
In addition there are three short films featuring other masters of the New Orleans drumming style. Josiah "Cie" Frazier and Alfred Williams were filmed in 1961 by Bill Russell and Barry Martyn. Both musicians had been active since the early 1920s and were widely considered as two of the most respected drummers in the city.
There is also footage of the last of the old-style, New Orleans drum players, Milford Dolliole, along with a short appearance by Abbey "Chinee" Foster, celebrated drummer with Celestin's Tuxedo Orchestra.
