NOTES: This CD is listed under both Oscar "Papa" Celestin and Sam Morgan. It includes all known recordings by both of these groups in New Orleans during the 1920's. Very little jazz was actually recorded in the city before the 1950's. It is pointed out in the concise and well researched liner notes by John Wilby that only 35 songs by black jazz bands were actually recorded in New Orleans in the 1920's by the main four record companies. Included here are 25 of those songs; 17 by Celestin and 8 by Morgan.
Celestin is a stoic figure in New Orleans jazz history. Born Jan. 1, 1884 in Napoleonville, Louisiana he moved to New Orleans in 1906. He remained a popular and enduring figure in the city until his death in 1954. Many folks today remember "Papa" Celestin performing at their high school dances. This collection of recordings was remastered by John R.T. Davies and is the best quality reissue to date. The music is hot and swinging New Orleans jazz with lots of ensemble and improvisation.
