NOTES:
Po'k Beans & Rice anthologizes the work of one of New Orleans' most legendary funk bands: Sam and the Soul Machine. Led by organist Sam Henry, the Soul Machine was as funky as the Meters but with a mellower twist in the melodies and a hypnotic looping groove thanks to Gary Brown's sax-work and Eugene Sinegal's guitar. While the Meters' Art Neville used punchy chords n his organ playing, Sam used fat, full chords to give their arrangements an orchestral feel. This anthology features tunes from a previously unreleased album recorded at Cosimo Matassa's Camp Street studio in 1969, a rare precious surviving artifact, a few months before Matassa's operation was shut down by the I.R.S. for tax evasion.
While Sam and the Soul Machine didn't make it out of New Orleans, they did create a funky yet smooth body of work that we have the pleasure of hearing today thanks to Sam Henry's foresight. Their pop leanings and full-blown arrangements showed the promise of a successful future. With today's generation "digging the crates' looking for some funk slices to play at clubs as well as collectors looking for rare and unreleased soul gems, the Soul Machine can be added the list of funk "must-haves" in any collection.
