NOTES:
"Alvin Batiste was one of a small group of Crescent City musicians dedicated to playing modern jazz. 'Mr. Bat' proves that - at any age - modernity is not a harmonic exercise, but rather a philosophical construct." - Branford Marsalis -
This multidimensional career that Alvin Batiste has fashioned. He created the first jazz studies program at the university level at Southern University (where he graduated); helped establish the New Orleans Center For Creative Arts (NOCCA), where he still teaches; and wrote the widely used textbook The Root of Progression System. While continuing to play his horn, he also composted several orchestral works and three operas. And he instructed and mentored a slew of aspiring talents, including two who are heard on this recording.

Branford Marsalis, who produced and played a bit of saxophone, and drum giant Herlin Riley are two of Batiste's better-known students and acquit themselves accordingly. Ed Perkins, who sings on four tracks, is another longtime friend from homeand pianist Lawrence Fields and bassist Ricardo Rodriguez, musicians at the start of their career. - Bob Blumenthal -
