This recording is a tribute to a dear friend, Lucien Barbarin, the great New Orleans trombone man/entertainer.
Lucien was a dear friend, inspiration, teacher, role model, guru and a brother who we lost to prostate cancer in January, 2020. His way of expressing himself thru music was a true gift. His mastery of the plunger and other mutes was amazing. He is truly a one of a kind….real New Orleans.
Mutes were used on every song except one on this recording. It adds so many tones and textures to the horns, something Lucien would have loved.
The band played so great and is made of of some dear friends of mine. We have all played many times together over the years in so many different bands.
We have Lucien’s ‘Musical Director,’ Kevin Louis on long cornet..that is what Lucien called Kevin on Thursday Nights at Preservation Hall.
The New Orleans Jazz Vipers rhythm section… Mitchell Player-bass, Molly Reeves-guitar, Steve Detroy-piano and Lucien’s nephew Jerry Barbarin Anderson-drums. They played so great, as they always do.
A BIG thank you to the Threadhead Cultural Foundation for getting the ball rolling on this. I can’t wait for you to hear it!
Peace and Love…..Craigory
