Based on a little known historical event, the Islenos Trappers War occurred in St. Bernard Parish In Southern Louisiana in the winter of 1926. It Began when the indigent Islenos population (original Spanish settlers from the Canary Islands) ran into resistance from a local political bigwig, Leander Perez, then DA of nearby Plaquemines Parish over rights to fertile land that was rich with muskrat, an animal eagerly sought after by Northern fur buyers. What started out as a legal battle in the courtroom soon erupted into a bloody confrontation in the swampy marshes surrounding St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes where the Islenos doled out their brand of “Delta Justice”.
