Notes

Grammy Award winning R&B singer-songwriter and producer, PJ Morton, is returning to his church roots for his first inspirational set, “Gospel According to PJ” Much like Aretha Franklin’s 1972 opus “Amazing Grace” or Al Green’s 1977 come-to-Jesus moment, “Belle”; Morton is coming home with a career-defining masterwork and bringing with him many of the iconic gospel artists who influenced or inspired him (Yolanda Adams, Commissioned Kirk Franklin, etc.) when he was just the teenaged, piano-playing son of a Preacher Man back in the 1990s. This songbook of gems are musical tales that Morton wrote for other artists, songs he wrote for others that were never released and brand new compositions too. All of the prior released songs have been rebooted and re-imagined such as Jonathan McReynold’s guitar-driven 2015 smash “Gotta Have You” which is now unrecognizable as a funky jam featuring Kirk Franklin, Jermaine Dolly and Lena Byrd Miles. The album is full of highlights such as the original members of Commissioned coming together to for “Over and Over” and the elusive Smokie Norful delivering an incomparable performance on “Let Go.” It’s a perfect blend of vintage voices such as J Moss, Kim Burrell, The Clark Sisters and platinum-duo Mary Mary alongside bright new ones such as Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Travis Greene, Zacardi Cortez, Le’Andria Johnson, Darrel Walls and Brian Courtney Wilson. Oh yes, and Morton’s father – Bishop Paul S. Morton – surfaces for some fun interludes that help define this Gospel According to PJ.
