Notes
When folklorist Ralph Rinzler made these recordings and subsequently booked many of the artists at the Newport Folk Festival and at the Smithsonian’s Festival of American Folklife, he set in motion a resurgence of interest in Cajun and Creole music that persists to this day. Most importantly, the musicians returned home “to share the echo of the standing ovations they received,” in Dewey Balfa’s words, instilling new pride in these previously marginalized cultures.
“These recordings are among the most important in the history of Cajun and Creole music.” –Barry Jean Ancelet
